Back in the 19th Century, Royal Wharf was an industrial works used for the manufacture of TNT during the First World War. Tragically in 1917, a huge explosion took place, killing 73 people and injuring hundreds more. The ‘Silvertown Explosion’ as it became known, was so strong that 70,000 buildings around the surrounding area were significantly damaged. A memorial has since been erected in the centre of the development to pay respect to the lives lost and those injured. It remains to this day, the biggest explosion in London’s history. Fast forward to the 1980s and Shell UK took over the area for oil storage and refining before it was eventually left vacant at the end of the 1990s. After considerable discussions with Newham Council, the plans for the Royal Wharf that we know today were approved in 2012. The area is now a thriving community, with shops, bars and cafes, a primary school, dentist, nail salon, coffee shop and more on the way. Located close to the ExCel centre and London City Airport, Royal Wharf has become increasingly popular with commuters and professionals who are looking for somewhere to rent. However, its nearby parks and burgeoning community make Royal Wharf a favourite for students, families and first-time buyers.
Royal Wharf hosts the most impressive amenities. Sprawled across two floors, The ‘Clubhouse’ allows residents to swim, workout and relax in style. The 25m pool features relaxing beds, hydropool, tropical shower and a state-of-the-art gym. Rivalling many of the boutique London gyms, residents can expect a full range of free weights, TRX, boxing zone and machines. Adjacent to the weights, is a cardio fitness suite, complete with bikes, elliptical, rowers and treadmills as well as filtered ice cold water to keep you hydrated. A separate studio space offers a range of fantastic classes for all levels, including Bootcamp and HIIT to Yoga and Pilates. Spin bikes are also on hand if you fancy a cycling workout with a difference, and wall-mounted screens offer the chance to stream your favourite YouTube workout no matter what time of the day. Just like any professional London gym, personal trainers are on hand to check your form or to book for one-on-one sessions. Private swimming lessons are available for both children and adults, perfect if you’ve been inspired by the nautical surroundings of the development.
Royal Wharf might seem like it is tucked away from civilisation, however it is in fact an extremely well-connected transport hub. Less than a five-minute walk to Pontoon Dock DLR means residents can be at Bank interchange in only 17-minutes, Canary Wharf in 10-minutes and London City Airport in just two-minutes (great if you have to travel for work or you love a spontaneous holiday). Crossrail will serve the residents at Royal Wharf at Custom House Station, with 12 trains an hour during peak times. This will offer a 17- minute journey to Bond Street, 10-minutes to Liverpool Street and under an hour to Heathrow Airport. Construction has just finished on the Thames Clipper Pier, so whether you like a scenic route to work, or you like to avoid the Underground on the weekend, you can enjoy a more peaceful start or end to your day.
Inspired by everything to do with the water, Royal Wharf’s blocks are named after all things aquatic. From Flotilla House to Fairwater, the development has an intriguing mix of apartments and townhouses, something which is somewhat unusual for new developments. This mix of property style creates an almost village-like sense of community in the development. Despite Royal Wharf totalling more than 40 acres of land, it retains a close-knit group of residents who are not just neighbours but friends. Residents are part of a WhatsApp group where they often organise yoga, picnics and gatherings in the green space in the middle of the development, fostering a village-like feel. Below are some of the more popular options for renters, however you can see our current list of properties here. -Liner House is the tallest block in the development and is often the most popular choice for those wishing to have a scenic river view. -Townhouses on Admiralty Avenue are perfect for families, with many of the properties having private gardens and balconies. These are particularly well-suited to those who love an outdoor BBQ or celebration. -Pendant Court is a popular choice for those looking for a modern and fresh approach to living. A 24-hr concierge and landscaped communal gardens give a tranquil atmosphere to renters in this building. - Fairwater has the speediest access to the Clipper Pier, so if you're a fan of watching boats or you enjoy being close to the water’s edge, it’s the perfect place for you. All of the Royal Wharf properties have access to the landscaped gardens, outdoor space and first class facilities that make the development an exciting and vibrant place to live.
